Essential Guide: Renting a Motorcycle in Thailand

At Adventure Bikes Pattaya, we receive a lot of questions about renting a Motorbike in Thailand. We gathered the most popular ones to make the Bike rental process smooth and stress free.

Rental Policy

No, we do not require you to leave your original passport. We only need a copy of your passport and a security deposit (cash only), which is fully refundable upon the safe return of the motorcycle.

Yes, a security deposit is required for all rentals. We accept 500 EUR, 500 USD, or 15,000 THB in cash.
Once you return the bike in the same condition as it was received, your deposit will be returned to you immediately.
However, if you choose full insurance coverage for the bike, the damage deposit is reduced to only 5,000 THB.

Not at Adventure Bikes Pattaya! All our rentals come with unlimited mileage, so you can explore Thailand’s stunning landscapes as far as you want without worrying about extra costs.

The base price covers the motorcycle rental. Optional accessories are available for an extra daily fee, such as premium riding gear, rain suits, side boxes, and Bluetooth headsets. Please ask us for the daily rates of these items.

Driver’s License & Legal Requirements

To ride legally in Thailand, you need a valid motorcycle driver’s license from your home country AND a valid International Driving Permit (IDP). Please ensure your IDP specifically covers the motorcycle category. Riding without these can lead to fines and may void your travel insurance in case of an accident.

Legally, no. In Thailand, a car license does not cover motorcycles or scooters, even if your home country allows it for small engines. To stay compliant with local laws and insurance policies, a proper motorcycle endorsement is required.

All you need is a valid driving license that confirms you are authorized to ride a motorcycle.
This can be either a local Thai driving license or a valid International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home country's license.
Please bring your original passport with you, as we are required to make and keep a copy for the rental agreement.

Safety & Riding Rules

Yes, absolutely. Wearing a helmet is mandatory by law for both the rider and the passenger. We provide helmets with every rental to ensure your safety.

In Thailand, we ride on the left side of the road. If you are used to riding on the right, take some time to practice in a quiet area before heading into Pattaya’s main traffic.

In urban areas like Pattaya, the limit is usually 40-60 km/h. On highways and rural roads, it varies between 80-90 km/h. Always keep an eye out for local signs and adjust your speed to the road conditions.

Insurance & Accidents

Yes, all our rentals include basic insurance. However, terms and coverage can vary depending on the model. We provide a clear explanation of your coverage before you sign the contract, ensuring "Total Peace of Mind" during your trip.

Yes, we offer an optional Full Damage Coverage for the motorcycle, which we highly recommend. This insurance is designed to protect you from high repair costs in case of an accident.

Here is how it works:

  • Coverage: This insurance covers damages to the motorcycle only. Please note that it does not cover the rider, the passenger, or third-party liability.

  • Reduced Deposit: If you choose this full coverage, your security deposit for damage is reduced to only 5,000 THB.

  • Daily Rates: The cost is calculated per day and varies depending on the motorcycle model. For example, the insurance for a Honda CB500X is 390 THB per day.

  • Payment: The insurance fee is paid directly to the insurance company (subject to their terms and conditions).

This insurance has proven itself many times and provides our riders with significant peace of mind. We recommend adding it to your rental for a stress-free journey.

If you decide not to purchase the optional Full Damage Coverage, you will be held fully responsible for any damage caused to the motorcycle during the rental period.

In this case:

  • Full Security Deposit: You will be required to leave a higher security deposit (typically 15,000 THB / 500 USD / 500 EUR).

  • Repair Costs: In the event of an accident or damage, you must pay the full cost of repairs and parts according to the official manufacturer's price list.

  • Downtime Compensation: You may also be charged for the days the motorcycle is in the workshop and cannot be rented to other customers.

Our Advice: To avoid unexpected high costs and ride with total peace of mind, we strongly suggest choosing the Full Damage Coverage. For a small daily fee, you can protect yourself from significant financial risk.
